German Oktoberfest music

December 20, 2021

Wurstfest 2010Beerfest season is over. It’s a hard reality to swallow. This is however, great news for my wallet situation. Moving + beerfests has proved to be quite a doozy. BUT just because this epic time of year has come to an end, I still have more to share with you guys who are trying to live vicariously through Germans by attending American “Oktoberfests”. Don’t get me wrong, I attended Wurstfest in New Braunfels, TX (HAPPENING NOVEMBER 1-10th THIS YEAR – A MUST ATTEND Y’ALL TEXAS FOLK!) and had a blast. It was fairly authentic, too. It’s just not the same.

One big reason it’s not the same is the music. Oh music, bringing people together since… OK tried to Google this answer and got no definitive answer. But we’ll say music has been bringing people together since the beginning of man time. But no music brings people together quite like Oktoberfest jams. One second, you are surrounded by strangers. The next, the band starts, and you are besties with the 50 year old creeper next to you and it’s fabulous.

I created a Spotify playlist for those of you who want to be prepared for Oktoberfest. It is truly worth preparation as singing along makes it even better. Oh, and “Fliegerlied” has a dance to go along with it, so be sure to learn the motions before your trip.

Additionally, each year there are songs dubbed “Wiesn Hits.” For 2012, I’d say “Ai Se Eu Te Pego” was a biggie. I also love that “Country Roads” is always hugely popular; it makes for such a great singalong.

But really, if you know any two German songs, you must know:

“Ein Prosit”

This song is played just about every 20 minutes and is easy to learn. You’ll want to join in the all the “Prost-ing”. I’m pretty sure my arm was sore from holding my beer up so much during this song. It goes like this:

Ein Prosit, ein Prosit, der Gemütlichkeit (repeat)

Translated: A toast, a toast, to comfort/togetherness/goodtimes/nodirecttranslationofthisword.

“Fliegerleid (So Ein Schoner Tag)”

After my first trip to Oktoberfest, I seriously could not quit playing this song. I wanted to know every word and dance move so I could go all out next time and you bet I go all out every time the band busts this song out.
