My mother had narcolepsy, the sleeping disease, and could fall asleep in the middle of any routine activity: typing, washing dishes, driving. It leant a piquant spice to my upbringing. Asking, “Mom, are you awake?” was a routine part of the experience of being in our car. She came to see Star Wars with us when it came out, in the tiny theatre in Wiarton, Ontario, god knows why. Predictably, she fell asleep. Literally the only thing she could remember afterwards was, “The Space Pirate was cute.”
